Members of California Legislature Urge for Adoption of SB 54 Regulations

SACRAMENTO, CA – Members of the California Legislature released a joint statement today urging the adoption of the proposed SB 54 regulations. These members include: Senator Ben Allen, Senate Majority Leader Lena Gonzalez, Senator Scott Wiener, Senator Catherine Blakespear, Senator Josh Becker, Senator Sasha Renée Pérez, Senator Henry Stern, Senator Monique Limón, Assemblymember Damon Connolly, Assemblymember Isaac Bryan, Assemblymember Tasha Boerner, and Assemblymember Dawn Addis.

“California stands at a fork in the road. For decades, we have been pumping plastic into our markets and environment - leading to heightened pollution and clogs within our waste management systems that overwhelm our city and county jurisdictions. Throughout this time, the cost burdens of all this have fallen on the ratepayers who have faced rate hike after rate hike due to the ever-increasing difficulty of managing all of the plastic pollution and waste.

After years of work, a ballot measure proposal, and intense negotiations, the legislature and governor finally took action with the passage of SB 54. Now is a critical opportunity to take action to uphold the recycling standards outlined in the law and provide financial relief for hard-working California ratepayers. We recently sent a letter to Governor Newsom outlining why we need to implement his department’s proposed SB 54 regulations without delay. It’s time to bring these producers into the equation on behalf of California residents and future generations and get to work on the implementation of the law. Maintaining the status quo by going back to the drawing board is unsustainable at best.”
