Senator Ben Allen Selects Grades of Green As District 26 Nonprofit of the Year
SACRAMENTO – Senator Ben Allen today announced that he has named El Segundo-based Grades of Green as Nonprofit of the Year for the 26th Senate District.
Since its founding in 2009, Grades of Green has helped students of all backgrounds to be stewards of the environment while developing leadership and collaboration skills. According to Grades of Green, more than 670,000 students have been involved with its programs and have conserved 21 million gallons of water and prevented 1,300 tons of carbon dioxidefrom entering the atmosphere, among other achievements.
“For more than a decade, Grades of Green has provided essential resources and information about the impact each of us makes on the environment,” said Senator Allen. “Grades of Green is equipping young leaders to have an exponential reach in ramping up worldwide efforts to address the climate crisis.”
Grades of Green programs include UPLIFT School Districts Partnerships with school districts to achieve long-term environmental goals and support economically disadvantaged communities; and LAUNCH Project Toolkits that expand classroom access to environmental education. Despite the COVID-19 pandemic, their RISE Climate Solutions Campaign provided students in seven states and six countries with the ability to engage hundreds of thousands of people through student-organized initiatives to tackle pressing threats to the environment.
“The Grades of Green team educates and empowers students to take action and lead environmental change to ensure a clean and sustainable environment for generations to come. We are deeply honored to be recognized by Senator Allen as a 2022 Nonprofit of the Year,” said Executive Director Kim Siehl.
Each year, nearly every California legislator chooses a nonprofit organization in their district to honor in collaboration with the State Assembly Select Committee on the Nonprofit Sector and the California Association of Nonprofits. Senator Allen’s past honorees include AllTogether LA, Jewish Family Service LA, Project Angel Food, Step Up On Second, and Westside Food Bank.

Ben Allen represents the 26th State Senate District, which consists of the Hollywood, Westside, coastal, and South Bay communities of Los Angeles County, and serves as Chair of the Senate Environmental Quality Committee and the Joint Committee on the Arts.
