Senator Ben Allen to Hold Press Conference on Ocean Pollution Reduction Act
Los Angeles, CA – Senator Ben Allen (D-Santa Monica) will hold a press conference for the Ocean Pollution Reduction Act, SB 705, on Monday, May 22nd. SB 705 will reduce the amount of toxic waste that pollutes our beaches and oceans, chokes our landfills and litters our communities by phasing out takeout polystyrene (AKA Styrofoam) food packaging that cannot be recycled or composted. Over 100 municipalities in California have taken a stand against plastic waste by limiting the use of polystyrene, and this statewide ban on polystyrene food packaging will amplify these local efforts to fight plastic pollution. The press conference will be held at UCLA’s campus, where polystyrene was eliminated from their dining operations in 2009 as part of a Zero Waste to Landfill by 2020 policy target.
