Senate Advances Measure to Move California Away from Reliance on Unnecessary PFAS
SACRAMENTO, CA – Senate Bill 682, authored by Senator Ben Allen (D-Santa Monica), received bipartisan support to advance to the State Assembly.
“We cannot continue turning a blind eye to the very serious impacts PFAS chemicals have on human health and our environment,” said Senator Allen. “The evidence is clear: these forever chemicals are known to cause cancer and easily spread into every part of our environment, including throughout our own bodies. I’m glad to see this proposal receive bipartisan support as we move closer to better protecting our communities.”
SB 682 moves California toward the gradual phase out of unnecessary and intentionally added PFAS chemicals from a number of key products sold and distributed in California. The bill has received strong support from local governments, water districts, and sanitation agencies because of the massive burdens they currently face trying to keep their infrastructure free from harmful PFAS. It is also supported by working groups such as the Nurses Association and Professional Firefighters because of the health risks they face when encountering PFAS so frequently on the job.
SB 682 will now head to the Assembly to be heard in its respective committee in the coming weeks.
