Creative Workforce Development Act of 2021 Signed into Law by Governor Newsom

Sacramento – The Creative Workforce Development Act of 2021 was signed into law by Governor Newsom this week. Inspired in part by the New Deal-era Works Progress Administration, Senate Bill 628 by Senator Ben Allen (D – Santa Monica) will provide employment and job training for artists and creative sector workers. The new law focuses on uplifting people from disadvantaged communities who may not otherwise have opportunities to pursue careers in the arts.

“The arts and creative industries are a force for raising awareness, recording history, amplifying voices, building community,” said Senator Allen. “With this new law, more people will have the opportunity to train for careers in California’s creative workforce, regardless of their backgrounds or connections.”

SB 628 received bipartisan support and was backed by arts organizations, industry leaders, and labor unions throughout the Golden State. It will go into effect January 1, 2022.
