STATEMENT: California Senate Leader on Election of New Republican Minority Leader

Tuesday, March 14, 2017

SACRAMENTO – California Senate President pro Tempore Kevin de León (D-Los Angeles) released the following statement on the election of Senator Patricia Bates (R-Laguna Niguel) to serve as the new Senate Minority Leader:

“California is lucky to have a Legislature that gets important work done for the people of our great state. While hyper-partisan acrimony overtakes and paralyzes our nation’s capital, under our Capitol dome, Republicans and Democrats work together to confront major challenges that need to be addressed.

“Senator Jean Fuller has led her caucus with real poise and a serious focus on what matters. As my partner she was always sincere, honest, and always sought consensus instead of gridlock. I consider her a friend and I’m honored to have served alongside her since we were both freshmen in the Assembly.

“I congratulate Senator Patricia Bates on being elected by the Republican Caucus to be their new leader. Her career in social work helping our most vulnerable communities, and her leadership at local, county and state levels will prove essential. I look forward to continuing a productive and collaborative relationship -- the people of California expect no less.”
