SACRAMENTO – The Senate Judiciary Committee voted in favor of SB 529, legislation authored by Senator María Elena Durazo (D- Los Angeles) which would ensure a tenant’s right to organize by protecting them from retaliatory eviction. The bill now heads to the Appropriations Committee.

“Tenants who speak up and join their neighbors are at risk of eviction and some cases, harassment,” stated Durazo. “SB 529 seeks to balance power between landlords and tenants and promote fairness in housing.”

Almost four households are evicted every minute in the United States. This moral, social and economic crisis is even more pronounced in California, where nearly half our population are renters, 61% of whom are low income, and 81% spend over 30% of their income on rent.  Moreover, in California, 44% of renters are raising families.
