Senate Leader de León on the passage of Cap-and-Trade

SACRAMENTO – California Senate President pro Tempore Kevin de León (D-Los Angeles) released the following statement after the California State Senate passed a package of bills to extend the state’s landmark Cap-and-Trade program to 2030.

“Californians overwhelmingly support our efforts to tackle climate change; they know it’s an urgent threat and they want us to continue to lead. That’s exactly what we’re doing by extending cap and trade.

“We’ve set the most ambitious greenhouse gas reduction targets in the nation, and cap and trade is our insurance policy to help us reach those goals efficiently and affordably. This bill package reduces energy costs, strengthens local air quality and stabilizes the critical revenue streams that allow us to invest in clean energy and quality of life improvements for all communities across California.

“Californians understand that we can’t truly have a healthy economy that’s built to last without taking meaningful steps to protect public health and preserve a livable environment.  This deal strikes that balance and shows once again California is more than ready to step up and lead where Washington will not.”
