Statement: California Senate Leader on the Tragedy in Orlando

Sunday, June 12, 2016

SACRAMENTO – California Senate President pro Tempore Kevin de Leon (D-Los Angeles) released the following statement on the attack in Orlando:

"Yet again.

"A mass shooting happens across the nation but we always feel it right in our hearts. My heart right now aches tremendously for the families of the victims in Orlando. These were real lives that were lost, not just a number, and I can only imagine the infinite sea of sorrow this terrible tragedy has caused.

"I also stand with the entire LGBT community in what was an attack on our pride. California celebrates tolerance and diversity and we strive to create an accepting society that fights against the type of hate that led to this tragedy. As the world struggles with forces seeking to divide us, California has a responsibility to lead with this example and also stand united in our quest for sensible gun-control policy.

"The now deadliest shooting in U.S. history reminds us why California has to get it absolutely right as we work to prevent gun violence. There are logical steps we can take to prevent highly destructive weapons from getting into the wrong hands, responsible ways to do it, and we can take action right now.

"Thoughts and prayers are not enough."
