Packed Schedule Highlights California’s Leadership in Environmental Protection and Green Jobs

In an effort to promote California’s global leadership on environmental protection and clean energy innovation, as well as learn best practices from other government and NGO environmental leaders, Senate President pro Tempore Kevin de León will join a California delegation in Lima, Peru, from December 7-11, 2014, to participate in meetings for the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change.

Hello my fellow Californians, it is great being with each and every one of you here on this special day.

Today marks a new chapter for all of us to work together and get things done for the people of California.

This legislative body leads the nation time and time again in enacting policies that are important to all Americans.

What we do here matters and I am extremely proud of what we have accomplished together.

It is an honor to serve as your President Pro Tempore of the California State Senate.

I thank you for this humbling opportunity.

SACRAMENTO – Tonight, President Obama announced his long-awaited executive actions to provide administrative relief for up to five million undocumented immigrants living in the United States. The Immigration Accountability Executive Actions, in addition to continuing the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, grant the parents of U.S. citizen and Legal Permanent Resident children protection from deportation if they have resided in the country for at least five years. In order to qualify for relief, a background check must be passed and taxes must be paid.

Today, the University of California Board of Regents Committees on Long-Term Range Planning and Finance Committees will consider President Janet Napolitano’s Stability Plan to increase student tuition over the next three years.

Since 2004, UC’s tuition has more than doubled. This is a trend that cannot continue.

Concerned that a surge in out-of-state students at University of California campuses may put residents at a disadvantage, Senate leader Kevin de Leon (D-Los Angeles) called Thursday for UC administrators to significantly boost tuition for nonresidents.

Debbie ManningSACRAMENTO – California Senate President pro Tempore Kevin de León (D-Los Angeles) today announced the appointment of Debbie Manning as Chief Sergeant-at-Arms, effective immediately, making her the first woman and person of color to serve in the position. Manning has served as Acting Chief since August 2014, this appointment makes the position permanent.

“I’m pleased the Governor has finally appointed a permanent director to oversee the Department of Toxic Substances Control (DTSC) after a six month vacancy. DTSC is in dire need of a shakeup and Exide appears to be the tip of iceberg of problems at DTSC - the state agency charged with protecting public health from toxic releases.

There have been repeated failures over decades that have impacted the health and environment of the residents in the communities I represent, including Boyle Heights, East LA, and Southeast LA.
