Senator Ben Allen Co-Chairs Hearing on Teacher Shortage

 

Sacramento, CA — Tomorrow afternoon, Senator Ben Allen (D – Santa Monica) will co-chair a Joint Informational Hearing of the Senate Education Committee and the Assembly Education Committee on California’s teacher shortage. According to the Learning Policy Institute, California is projected to need 20,000 new teachers for next year but is expected to issue only 11,500 new teacher credentials. Their report also found that the number of underprepared teachers working in California public schools has more than doubled in the last three years. The hearing will include testimony about the teacher career pipeline, as well as programs and local approaches to attracting and retaining teachers.
