Fiscally Responsible Solution to Reduce Workplace Hazards for Hotel Housekeepers
 

(Sacramento, CA) – A negotiation has been facilitated by Senator Kevin de León (D-Los Angeles) that will help the hotels find a fiscally responsible solution to protecting their workers. The Senator is pleased to announce he is brokering a deal with the Administration that seeks an administrative resolution to reduce workplace hazards for hotel housekeepers. The Administration has committed to developing measures to address the ergonomic hazards in hotel housekeepers’ bed-making and cleaning activities.

(Los Angeles, CA) – Senator Kevin de León is convening a hearing of the Senate Select Committee on Sports and Entertainment to examine the proposed downtown Los Angeles Event Center. This hearing will provide the Senate with valuable information from AEG, labor groups, environmental advocates, community based organizations and residents of the community on the impacts of the proposed stadium.

I want to clean up Vernon while protecting the jobs in that city.  In this letter I offered the City a comprehensive and aggressive reform plan.  If they’re sincere about cleaning up the mess they’ll agree to make the changes, and immediately begin making amends to the surrounding communities by investing in park and open space creation and improving the quality of life in those neighborhoods.

De León Bill Protecting Student Athletes from Unscrupulous Sports Agents Signed by the Governor

(Sacramento, CA) - California’s collegiate student athletes scored big when Senate Bill (SB) 238 was signed by the Governor earlier this week. The bill creates penalties for athlete agents who victimize student athletes and comes at a time when there have been numerous ethics and legal violations in NCAA athletics both in California and nationally.

Press Conference/Community Meeting in LA

(Los Angeles, CA) – Utilizing the Legislative summer recess break, Senator Kevin de León is meeting in Los Angeles with the Chinese business community in advance of a jobs trip to China to discuss ways he can maximize his upcoming trip to learn what might be most beneficial for partnerships between California and Chinese businesses.

"China is an emerging global economic powerhouse. There are certainly lessons we can learn directly and through partnership exploration development that can help us with job creation here in California," said Senator De León. "I'm meeting with the leading Chinese businessmen in my community to learn more about where my emphasis should be and how I might use this trip to benefit their trade and economic development activities."

Senator De León is carrying Senate Bill 535 known as the California Communities Healthy Air Revitalization Trust (CHART), which helps fulfill the commitments made by our state in the California Global Warming Solutions Act (AB 32) prescribing that we invest in neighborhoods that continue to suffer from higher levels of pollution and which are least able to confront the expected impacts of the climate change crisis.
