President Pro Tempore de León Announces Appointments

SACRAMENTO- California Senate President pro Tempore Kevin de León (D- Los Angeles), Chair of the Senate Rules Committee, has announced the following Rules Committee Appointments:

Alejandra Campoverdi, a Democrat from Los Angeles, has been appointed to the California Children and Families Commission. Ms. Campoverdi is self-employed as a women's health advocate. She previously served as managing editor of the Los Angeles Times #EmergingUS and later as director of Multicultural Content, and as the White House Deputy Director of Hispanic Media. She is also a volunteer teacher for Inside Out Writers, an organization for incarcerated youth, and serves on the boards of the Harvard Journal of Hispanic Policy, and Harvard's Shorenstein Center on Media, Politics and Public Policy. Her term end date shall be December 12, 2018. Compensation shall be per diem and reasonable expenses.

The California Commission on Children and Families, also known as “First 5 California”, convenes, partners in, supports, and helps lead the movement to create and implement a comprehensive, integrated, and coordinated system for California's children prenatal through age 5 and their families. It also provides for independent research; provides technical assistance to county commissions in adopting and implementing county strategic plans; reviews and considers the annual audits and reports transmitted by the County Commissions; and makes recommendations to the Governor and the Legislature for changes in state laws.

Ellen Trover, JD, a Democrat from Thermal, has been reappointed to the Coachella Valley Mountains Conservancy Governing Board. Ms. Trover is an attorney and the Managing Partner of the Lloyd-Trover Partnership also known as Rancho Ellenita, which is both a working farm and art gallery.  She is also a member of the Riverside County Farm Bureau and the Coachella Valley Historical Society.  She has served as a Senate Rules Committee appointee on the Coachella Valley Mountains Conservancy since 2007. Her term end date shall be June 28, 2019.  Compensation shall be $75 per meeting day or while on official business plus actual and necessary expenses. Compensation shall not exceed $450 annually.

The purpose of the Coachella Valley Mountains Conservancy Governing Board is to acquire and hold, in perpetual open space, mountainous lands surrounding the Coachella Valley for the purposes of public recreation, educational experience, and enjoyment.

Celinda Vazquez, a Democrat from Hawthorne, has been appointed to the Commission on the Status of Women and Girls. Ms. Vazquez is the Vice President of External Affairs for Planned Parenthood Los Angeles/Planned Parenthood Advocacy Project LA.  She previously served as Assistant Director of State Government Relations, University of California Los Angeles Government and Community Relations. She is a member of Little Ripples, a project of i-ACT, and the California Latino Legislative Caucus Institute: Madrinas Padrinos Leadership Program. She also served as a Senate Rules Committee appointee on the California Board of Psychology from 2007 to 2011. Her effective date of appointment shall be July 1, 2017.  Her term end date shall be July 1, 2021.  Compensation shall be per diem of $100/day, not to exceed 12 days/year.  All members receive reimbursement of actual and necessary traveling expenses.

The Commission on the Status of Women and Girls works in a culturally inclusive manner to promote equality and justice for all women and girls by advocating on their behalf with the Governor, the Legislature and other public policymakers, and by educating the public in the areas of economic equity including educational equity, access to health care including reproductive choice, violence against women and other key issue areas identified by the Commission as significantly affecting women and girls.

Steve Weeks, a Democrat from Los Angeles, has been appointed to the State Board of Barbering and Cosmetology. Mr. Weeks is a retired loan consultant. He is also a member of the executive board of Southern Methodist University and a member of the Education and Workforce Development Council of the Los Angeles Chamber of Commerce.  His effective date of appointment shall be July 28, 2017.  The term end date shall be January 1, 2021.  Members shall receive $100 per diem and necessary expenses.

The mission of the State Board of Barbering and Cosmetology is to ensure the health and safety of California consumers by promoting ethical standards and by enforcing the laws of the barbering and beauty industry.
