LOS ANGELES – California Senate President pro Tempore Kevin de León (D-Los Angeles) issued the following statement in recognition of Earth Day, and in solidarity with Americans marching around the nation in defense of science:
Earth Day has never been more urgent than it is today. Our climate is changing more rapidly than expected, the federal government is the captive of special interests, and the institution of science is under attack. But humanity's finest moments have come in response to our darkest hours. Across the nation and the world – nowhere more so than California – brilliant scientists, engineers, policymakers and average citizens are mobilizing to build a clean energy future. No amount of denial or deception can halt our progress.
California has shown the way for decades and we will continue to lead the nation forward. We didn’t grow into the world’s 6th largest economy and a global epicenter of innovation by embracing “alternative facts." By following the science and taking common sense steps to protect consumers, wildlife, and our air and water, we’ve turned some of our biggest environmental challenges into economic opportunities. Our efforts have helped save American households billions of dollars in avoided fuel and energy costs, reduced the pollution that is so harmful to our children, families, and planet, and turned clean energy into a pillar of our economy that now employs over half a million Californians -- nearly ten times the number of coal jobs nationwide.
Happy Earth Day!
