SACRAMENTO – California Senate President pro Tempore Kevin de León (D-Los Angeles) and California Senate Budget Chair Holly Mitchell (D-Los Angeles) released the following statement regarding Governor Brown’s proposed 2017-18 state budget:
California Senate Leader Kevin de León (D-Los Angeles):
Governor Brown’s extremely cautious budget proposal matches the uncertain times ahead for our state under the incoming Administration.
We simply do not know what the state of the economy and the state of our revenues will be until May. Our most vulnerable may be under threat, our students and our senior citizens may lose important resources, and our businesses might suffer under archaic economic policy coming from this new White House.
The Senate will remain committed to expanding access to education, protecting our investments in childcare, and building out sustainable infrastructure across our state for the middle class. We must work to pass a balanced and fiscally prudent budget that still invests in human capital and I look forward to productive negotiations with the Assembly Speaker and Governor in the coming months.
California Senate Budget Chair Holly Mitchell (D-Los Angeles):
The Governor’s proposed budget that was released today was conservative but not surprising. The magnitude of its implications on the lives of all California’s requires that I take a deeper and more prudent review.
I stand with the Pro Tem in his commitment to protect our vulnerable populations and safeguard access to programs and services. These are unpredictable times. As budget chair, I will continue to be vigilant to ensure that the rights and well-being of all Californians are secure.
