Senator De León Seeks Permanent Reform of Troubled City

(Sacramento, CA) – At an emergency committee meeting this morning, the Legislature’s Joint Legislative Audit Committee (JLAC) joined by Speaker John Pérez, approved an audit request from Senator Kevin de León (D-Los Angeles) to seek full transparency from the City of Vernon. JLAC will do a performance audit of the city’s conduct for the past five years, examine current reform efforts and make recommendations for best practices for transparency moving forward. The audit due to be completed in April 2012, will help ensure that Vernon meets its commitments for reform and that the public has a full accounting of the city’s financial condition and governance practices.

Senator De León commented that there is benefit from reviewing what has transpired but the more critical component of the Audit Committee’s action is the ongoing monitoring and action. “The City of Vernon is compelled to clean itself up and I am hopeful with this audit that it will continue to take the steps necessary to build toward a better future,” said De León.
